Understanding MANOVA
What is MANOVA?
MANOVA (Multivariate ANOVA) extends ANOVA to handle multiple dependent variables simultaneously. Instead of testing one outcome, you can test several related outcomes at once.
When to Use MANOVA
- You have multiple dependent variables
- Variables are correlated with each other
- You want to avoid running multiple univariate ANOVAs
- Sample size is adequate for the number of variables
Example: Educational Intervention
Testing a new teaching method's effect on both test performance AND student engagement:
- Group 1 (Control): Traditional teaching
- Group 2 (Treatment): New teaching method
- DV1: Test score
- DV2: Engagement rating (1-10)
MANOVA tests whether the treatment affects both outcomes simultaneously.
Wilks' Lambda Test
This calculator uses Wilks' Lambda (Λ), the most common MANOVA test statistic.
- Λ ranges from 0 to 1
- Smaller values indicate stronger group differences
- Converted to an approximate F-statistic for testing significance
Important Notes
- Requires minimum 2 groups and 2 dependent variables
- Sample size should exceed number of DVs
- All groups should have adequate sample sizes
- Assumes multivariate normality and equality of covariance matrices
